In the Italian language, Gelato stands
for "frozen." Gelato dates back to the 16th century
where first appeared in the Florentine court of Francesco
de Medici by Bernardo Buontalenti.
Gelato originated in Italy in the far
North by the Dolomites and in the South by the Sicilians.
In Dolomite, the Gelato consisted of milk, cream, sugar,
eggs, and natural flavors. The sale of Gelato was one of
the major sources of income for its people and they charged
quite a high price as a result.
Only royalty could afford to enjoy the
delights of Gelato in its early days. Fortunately, for us
common folk the recipe leaked to everyone and has been a
huge part of Italian culture.
